Content

What is content decay?

Content decay is the gradual decline in a page’s search visibility and traffic over time.

What it means

Decay has several causes: the information is out of date, search intent has shifted, competitors have published stronger content, or a newer page on your own site targets the same topic and cannibalizes it.

How to use it

Diagnose the cause before you act on a decaying page. Outdated content calls for a refresh, cannibalization calls for separating the pages’ intents, and shifted intent calls for a new angle.
