What is canonical tag?

A canonical tag tells search engines which URL is the preferred version when several URLs show the same or very similar content.

What it means

A canonical tag is a hint, not a directive: search engines may weigh other signals and choose a different URL. It’s commonly used for filtered pages, parameter URLs, and duplicate content.

How to use it

A canonical tag alone won’t fix cannibalization between two different pages that target the same intent. Refresh one of the pages so each serves its own intent, and add an internal link to the primary page.
